Frequently asked questions
In your first therapy session, expect it to be a comfortable introduction, focused on building a foundation of trust, especially important for addressing trauma. I will ask about your background, life experiences, and what brought you to therapy, with a specific emphasis on understanding any trauma you’ve faced and how it’s affecting you now. I will explain my approach, particularly EMDR or internal family systems, which are designed to help safely process trauma in a way that feels manageable for you. You’ll discuss your goals and hopes for therapy while we work at a pace that respects your comfort and readiness.

Each therapy session will generally last around 45 minutes to a full hour, depending on your needs and comfort level. I will work within this timeframe to ensure each session feels supportive and productive, allowing for a focused exploration of your experiences, especially in relation to processing trauma, while also respecting your energy and boundaries.
Yes, what you discuss in therapy sessions is confidential. Therapists are legally and ethically bound to protect your privacy, meaning they cannot share details of your sessions without your permission. There are a few specific exceptions, which your therapist will explain in your first session. These usually include situations where there is a risk of harm to yourself or others, cases involving abuse or neglect of a vulnerable person, or if they are required by a court order. Otherwise, you can trust that your conversations remain private, creating a safe space for you to share openly.
The number of sessions needed can vary widely depending on your goals, the complexity of the issues you're addressing, and your progress over time. Some people benefit from short-term therapy, such as 6–12 sessions, especially if they have specific, targeted goals. However, trauma-focused therapies often take longer, as they involve processing deep-rooted experiences at a pace that feels safe and manageable. Many people find that ongoing, open-ended therapy allows them to fully explore and work through challenges.Regular check-ins will help determine if and when you’re ready to conclude therapy or move to a maintenance schedule.
